Teaching Approach
At Townsville, mathematics learning is tailored to the diverse profiles of our learners, supported by innovative pedagogies and purposeful use of technology. In the classroom, learning experiences are designed using the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model, enacted through Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) and Polya’s UPDC problem-solving approach. Together, these strategies equip students with both conceptual understanding and the skills needed to become independent learners.
Teaching primary mathematics effectively involves more than just presenting numbers and formulae. It underpins many aspects of everyday activities, from making sense of information around us to making informed decisions, helping students connect new concepts to what they already know and to real-life contexts.
