English Language
Vision
Every Townsvillite is a:
- Confident and effective communicator
- Discerning reader who is self-directed and passionate
Teaching Approach
At Townsville, we believe that learning English happens through the heart, mind and hand. This means we help students enjoy the language, think deeply and use their skills confidently in authentic situations. This is the engaged learning culture we build for every child.
With the 2020 English Language Syllabus, we place stronger emphasis on:
-
Metacognition – helping students understand how they learn, so they can plan, monitor and improve their work.
-
Multi-literacies – teaching students to read, view and create different types of texts, including digital and visual ones.
-
Inquiry through dialogue – encouraging students to ask questions, discuss ideas and learn through meaningful conversation.

Designing the curriculum
At Townsville, we use the Strategies for English Language Learning and Reading (STELLAR) approach to design our English Language curriculum. Through STELLAR, we aim to help our students grow into confident and curious learners with a strong desire to explore and understand the world around them.
This approach also nurtures students who can communicate clearly, work well in groups and interact effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
Exposure. Experience. Environment.
The 3Es approach guides the design of lesson experiences for each STELLAR theme. Through this approach, students receive rich and meaningful exposure that helps them build a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. At the same time, lessons are designed to strengthen the development of essential 21st Century Competencies.
The STELLAR programme also aims to nurture a love for reading and to build a strong language foundation. It uses age-appropriate texts and research-based teaching strategies to actively engage students in their learning of the English Language
